Powering the Metaverse: Building Sustainable AI Factories and Digital Twins

 /
Conversation Date: 10/12/2022

On the surface, a business meeting in the metaverse seems a lot more sustainable than everyone driving to the office. But what about all the computing power needed to build the AI factories and digital twins that will power tomorrow’s metaverse? Sustainable computing needs to be addressed as a data center scale problem. It can’t be solved just at the chip or server level. In a modern server, the power used for data movement far outpaces the power used for computation for most problems. And while high-level AI frameworks make it increasingly easy to develop AI software, at lower levels of the stack, someone needs to care about writing energy-efficient software.
